Before You Replace Your Opener: Is It Interference or a Dead Battery?
You rely on your garage door opener to allow you easy entry to your home. It should work from about 20 feet away, and if it doesn’t, it creates a challenge. However, just because your garage door opener isn’t working as it should, that doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. In fact, the correct answer is usually the simplest, and two of the most common problems that disrupt your garage door opener’s function include interference and a dead battery.
Understand the Problem: Test the Devices in Your Garage for Interference
If you have a dead battery, there’s an easy fix obviously. Switch out the batteries, and your garage door opener will probably be as good as new. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, the problem may be interference, which is slightly more complicated. Garage door remotes work on a radio signal, which is encoded so that it will respond to the door receiver. Sometimes, something gets in the way of that signal, causing interference and keeping the remote from working. The most likely culprit will be something in the garage, getting in the way of the signal. Some LED lights can interfere with radio lights, so that’s a place to start. To test your garage’s devices, plug the garage door opener into an outlet inside the house, using an extension cord, and shut down the power to the garage. Try using your remote, testing it at different distances, and if the range improves, unplug everything in the garage. Turn the breaker back on, and plug things in one at a time, while testing the remote, to find the item causing the problem.
Troubleshoot Remote Connectivity to Find the Causes of Interference
If there is nothing in the garage interfering with the signal, that doesn’t mean that interference isn’t the problem. It could be that an item inside your house, like a printer, an appliance, a motion detector, or a wireless doorbell is causing the problem. In some cases, it can even be the Wi-Fi network. It could also be something outside of your control, like a phone tower, an electric transformer, or something in your neighbor’s house. Sometimes, people who live within range of a military base or airport can find their garage door opener impacted by the facility’s operations.
Garage Remote Interference Fixes and Remote Signal Garage Door Solutions
If you can’t determine what is causing the interference, or it’s something out of your hands, you may still be able to fix the problem fairly easily. One fix is to reset the code on your garage door system, following the manufacturer’s instructions. If your garage door opening system is older, it may not have as much flexibility to switch radio frequencies, and this may be a good reason to upgrade. It is sometimes possible to update your system, using a conversion kit, rather than replacing it. When it does become necessary to replace your garage door opener, invest in one that has dual-frequency capabilities, so you don’t find yourself in the same situation again, trying to hunt down something interfering with the system.
